Scrabble Board

Scrabble: Our Favorite Word Game for a Reason

If you’re like us, you grew up playing Scrabble, so it’s been a part of your life all your life. Originally called “Criss-Crosswords” when it came out in 1938, Scrabble became the ultimate word game by the 1950s. Today, over 100 million Scrabble game sets have been sold around the world, and it’s an important way to have fun with words (and friends).

Where to Play Scrabble

All you need to play classic Scrabble is a game board and pieces (and one to three other people). You can play anywhere, from your dinner table on family game night to your tent when you’re on a camping trip.

You can also play Scrabble online or using an app, so if you don’t have a board, you’re still very much in the game. Sites like Internet Scrabble Club (ISC), and the official Scrabble online game make it easy to get started (and totally addicted) to online Scrabble. Plus, you’ll be able to play single games against the computer if you want to test your skills.

Apps like Scrabble Go let you have a Scrabble game in your pocket anytime you want. You can download it from the Google Play Store for Android devices and from the Apple App Store for iOS devices for free.

Scrabble Fun Facts

There’s no question Scrabble has captured imaginations around the world. We’re pretty excited about these fun Scrabble facts:

  • You can score up to 1,782 points with just one word. "Oxyphenbutazone" is the winning word, and you’d need to play it on three triple word score bonus spaces.
  • Scrabble dictionaries change all the time, just like the English language. About 300 new words can be added in a single year.
  • The North American Scrabble Players Association (NASPA) uses a different set of tiles during their tournaments so players can’t tell which tiles are blank by touch.
  • There are more than 4,000 Scrabble clubs in the world. These can be youth clubs, adult clubs, or clubs for players of various skill levels.
  • We think it’s pretty great that there’s a National Scrabble Day. Get ready to celebrate on April 13.
  • A word doesn’t have to be long to be a winner. “Qi” and “za” are high-point words that only need two letter tiles.
  • There are lots of Scrabble competitions around the world, including the North American Scrabble Championship, the Scrabble World Championship, and others.

Scrabble Game Variations

While the basic Scrabble rules are great and make it easy to understand the basics of the game, you might want to try some variations. These are a few fun options:

  • Solo Scrabble - Don’t have anyone to play with? No worries. Just play through the entire game on your own, totaling the score. Then play again and try to beat yourself.
  • Anagrams - Play with your Scrabble tiles but without the board. Just put all the tiles in the center of the table face-down and take turns revealing a tile. Remove words of three or more letters when you see them on the table and add up your scores.
  • Speed Scrabble - Beat the clock (and your friends) by playing Speed Scrabble. Instead of playing on a board and taking turns, players just grab from a communal draw pile and see who can make up the most words in the least amount of time.

Scrabble is also the ancestor of many other word games, and at first glance, it might seem the same. It’s unique, though. Here’s how Scrabble differs from some other popular games:

  • Scrabble vs. Words With Friends - Scrabble and Words With Friends are similar, but the board layout is different. So are the letter scoring and the number of letter tiles for each letter.
  • Scrabble vs. Crosswords - Scrabble and crossword puzzles are similar too, partially because Scrabble was inspired by crossword puzzles. But crossword puzzles have clues to help, and Scrabble is all about making use of your letter tiles.
  • Scrabble vs. Bananagrams - Both Scrabble and Bananagrams use letter tiles, but Bananagrams is simpler and doesn’t include a board with bonus tiles.
